Over the weekend of 9 and 10 May, PETRONAS Group ICT was among 70 other companies that joined the Graduan Aspire Career & Postgraduate Fair 2015 held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).

With over 36,000 career hopefuls attending the two-day career and networking fair, the PETRONAS Group ICT booth saw a continuous flow of fresh graduates and jobseekers crowding it as soon as doors opened on Saturday morning. PETRONAS Group ICT’s staff who manned the booths, greeted the crowd who were keen to find out about opportunities at PETRONAS.

It is essential to initially highlight that we were primarily looking for specific ICT skillsets to handle ICT projects at Group ICT. This ties in with our unique positioning of being an ICT organisation that delivers ICT solutions for PETRONAS Group worldwide.

One of the main objectives of our participation is to further promote the Young Graduate Programme (YGP) and internship opportunities that we offer. It is worthwhile to note that other companies such as Nestle, British American Tobacco Malaysia and Shell are also offering similar programmes also known as the Management Trainee Programme. Thus, the main question would be, how do we stand out from them and what is our “carrot” to attract these young graduates to join PETRONAS Group ICT instead of the other organisations?

One thing is for sure - it is PETRONAS’ strong brand as Malaysia’s fully integrated petroleum company. For last year's Graduan Brand Awards 2014, PETRONAS topped the list of Malaysia's Most Preferred Employers named by Talents (graduates and working professionals), defeating the other 49 companies that joined the Graduan Aspire Career & Postgraduate Fair 2014.

If this year’s Graduan Brand Awards “board of stickers” is anything to go by, perhaps we could be on the top of the list again for 2015!

Besides the wonderful volunteers who lent their time, energy and enthusiasm to the event, the level of support displayed by our leaders was definitely a morale boost. Rosehaida A Rahman, GM of the Human Resource Division, and Majdi Hamid, Head of Talent Acquisition attended the opening ceremony and joined the team in manning the booth. Later, COO Izwan Hasli and Head of Digital Innovation, Strategy & Architecture (DISA), Samsurin Welch also came to show their support and speak to visitors at the booth.

It was heartening to see that a lot of staff volunteered at the event, sharing their aspirations with potential candidate.

At the end of the two-day fair, more than 1,200 visitors from different educational backgrounds such as Information Technology (IT), Business, Programming, Finance, and Engineering registered their names and expressed their interest in pursuing a career at PETRONAS Group ICT. Since the event, hundreds (and growing) of applications have been submitted through PETRONAS' career website for Group ICT jobs. It was such a worthwhile experience to see the level of interest shown by the visitors. I guess we will be seeing more new faces at our offices soon!
