Team Honesty from SMK Seksyen 7 Shah Alam (SMK S7) emerged winner in The Brilliant Young Minds programme organised by Petronas ICT Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Petronas.

“I think it has been an amazing journey because we got to learn and tried out new things,” said team member Eqhwan Tirmidzi Mohd Rashidee.

He was among 30 Form One and Two students from SMK Daman-sara Jaya (SMK DJ) and SMK S7 who were selected to be part of the eight-month-long programme.

In the final, the teams pitched to a panel of judges real-world solutions they had developed for the oil and gas industry.

“The programme leverages on Petronas ICT’s core competencies in digital innovation, ICT knowledge and skills to help the students learn robotics and embedded programming,” said Petronas ICT Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Redza Goh.

“It promotes critical and creative thinking as well as improves their communication skills and build confidence when pitching ideas,” Goh added.

During the programme, the students were introduced to various digital literacy tools such as Arduino robotics and programming, and learned to project manage and problem solve by developing prototypes.

Throughout the programme, they were guided by Petronas ICT staff and subject matter experts from the company’s various business units who volunteered as mentors.

One of the judges, MDEC Talent Development and Digital Entrepreneurship vice-president Sumitra Nair, was impressed with the progress of the students.

“I think the quality of ideas and the students’ presentations were outstanding considering they are only in Form One and Two. This is also their first exposure to Arduino and programming.

“They have been able to apply their ideas and solve problems using new technologies they learnt during the programme within a short space of time.
