PETRONAS ICT Sdn Bhd has entered into a strategic partnership with Telekom Malaysia (TM) through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 24 April 2018.

The MoU was signed by PETRONAS President and Group Chief Executive Officer Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin and Telekom Malaysia Group Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Sri Mohammed Shazalli Ramly for both companies to jointly collaborate and enhance the customer experience and operational excellence of both organisations. The collaboration will also involve PETRONAS entities such as PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad (PDB), KLCC Property, and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS.

The MoU will see PETRONAS ICT involved in one of the five clusters of digital transformation initiatives:

The Five Clusters

Cluster One: Digitalising our workforce with Smart Pay services by PDB

This will increase the adoption of PETRONAS products amongst TM employees, starting with PDB extending its SMART Pay services to TM staff. This would allow cashless payments and increased operational efficiencies while providing significant savings on fuel costs each year for TM.

Cluster Two: Digitising data assets via TM Twin Core Data Centres

PDB and TM will work together to develop the Next Generation (NextGen) Network infrastructure to enhance the former’s retail network and improve its customer service delivery at PDB stations.

Cluster Three: Designing, planning and implementing NextGen Network infrastructure for PDB retail stations

Group ICT will collaborate with TM to explore a data centre of the future. This would involve digitising PETRONAS’ data assets to improve data security, as well as enhance user experience.

Cluster Four: Improving customer experiences, safety and security of KLCC Park

PETRONAS and TM will explore a Smart Park concept for KLCC. This initiative will not only improve the experience of patrons using the car park, but also increase the safety and security at the facility.

Cluster Five: The ‘Smart Helmet’ collaboration, which encourages safety in the workplace and other areas, which will continue to expand as this relationship grows

PETRONAS and TM will also invest in joint research covering areas concerning the oil and gas and telecommunications industries, such as building local competencies, knowledge exchange and the ‘Smart Helmet’ initiative, to encourage safety in the workplace.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee mentioned that Clusters One and Three “have progressed as both companies have signed a letter of intent”.

He added, “In PETRONAS’ digital transformation, collaboration sits at the core as we continue to expand the applications of analytics and predictive technology as well as rolling out initiatives under digital procurement and testing out various pilot digital projects. We welcome TM to be part of our network of partners in providing us with value-driven solutions at a greater pace.”

He emphasised that leading Malaysian companies must take the lead in working together and collaborating for greater success. “The opportunities are limitless – from solving current issues, providing support and services to co-creating and innovating future market offerings and solutions,” he said.
Commenting on the collaboration, Mohammed Shazalli said, “As the nation’s fully-integrated telecommunications company with the capability to provide the best connectivity, ICT and smart services, TM, together with its business solutions arm TM ONE, is proud to be a strategic partner in establishing the ecosystem for PETRONAS’ digital transformation”.

Sharing more on the data centre for the future, PETRONAS ICT’s Chief Operating Officer Izwan Hasli Ibrahim said that the initiative is aligned with PETRONAS ICT’s digital agenda and that he was looking forward to working with TM on this project. “Our partnership with TM not only creates opportunities for knowledge sharing but will inevitably raise our organisation’s competitive advantage as the data centre of the future will increase efficiency and optimise internal business practices”.
